Transforming Swindon – Swindon Sidings

One Swindon

The information below has been updated and further details can be found on the home page.
This webpage was published in December 2019 for the purpose of the public consultation and has been kept live for reference.

Design

A bespoke design approach has been taken to create a development that complements the heritage of the historic railway and neighbouring properties, whilst creating a flagship scheme for Swindon.

The linear nature of the site has allowed us to create unique character areas that each respond to their surroundings creating a new, high quality and sustainable neighbourhood at Swindon Sidings.

Turntable Circus Wootton Bassett Gateway Newburn Square Railway Village River View Apartments

Turntable Circus

This area would be mainly residential – with proposals including a new, four storey apartment building and town houses. The layout for Turntable Circus can be seen to the right.

The apartments would be designed in a contemporary style, whilst complementing the heritage of the nearby Victorian Pattern Store building. CGIs, shown below, illustrate how new homes at Turntable Circus could look in the context of existing buildings.

The proposed bike hub, which sits next to the pedestrian/cycle access at Park Lane, would also include a café for the use of new and existing residents.

Railway Village

New homes in Railway Village would take their inspiration from the Swindon Railway Village – incorporating terrace homes and coach houses amongst landscaping and pocket parks.

A variety of character areas along Railway Village will help to blend the new homes in with their surroundings. Newburn Mews would feature contemporary town houses, whilst The Sidings would primarily include coach houses. Beside this, landscaping and the open space of ‘Dean Square’ has been incorporated and designed to encourage community activity and soften the look of the development. Continuing on through the site, Railway Cottages would be primarily two storey in height, to complement existing development and the neighbouring Newburn Crescent neighbourhood.

CGIs, shown below, illustrate how this section of the site could look.

Newburn Square

Proposals for Newburn Square include new townhouses and apartments.

The railway heritage of Swindon has strongly informed the design of the Newburn House apartments, as the strong contemporary industrial aesthetic that complements the locally listed Weighbridge Brewhouse.

New homes would overlook Newburn Square, which would become the central hub of the site and include a retail unit for new and existing residents.

CGIs, shown below, illustrate how this section of the site could look.

River View Apartments

The character of River View apartments have been designed to complement the industrial heritage of the railway, including exposed metal framing around balconies.

There would be variety in the heights of the apartment buildings, with a central rooftop garden to create an open and shared space for the community. The design and landscaping approach is illustrated in the CGIs below. Click to enlarge.

This gateway has been designed to provide a positive gateway to the development from Wootton Bassett Road.
Terraced banks of planting and landscaping will border cycle and pedestrian paths into the site, as illustrated in the images below. Click to enlarge.
